I have a great job. I’m convinced of it. And everyday I’m grateful to God for leading Kel and me down this path to work with some of the most dynamic and amazing up-and-coming youth ministry leaders who come to study at Bethel College in Mishawaka, IN.
I have a great job. And each summer I realize it. Teachers are fortunate to have some months of wide open space, a chance to study, write, travel, and renew for the forthcoming school year. It’s also a temptation to be haphazard. To waste the chance for artistry (thanks, Seth Godin). To squander the days on meaningless busywork that amounts to little and renews nothing.

Coffee and a pristine morning in the Boundary Waters
The summer season means vacation and we are among those who often like to get away by truly getting “away” into the wilderness. Our favorite outdoor adventure in the US isn’t a sandy beach just outside a resort. No, we head north into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area of northern Minnesota. We spent a week up there recently and I wanted to post some updates on our experiments with various gear. (NOTE: You don’t have to buy any gear to camp here – you can use an outfitter. But, we go so often and pack our own food, so it makes sense for us to have our own.) Kel and I overpacked some extra items to see how they held up in the field and help us in planning for future, more adventurous trips. Here’s what we think is the best camping gear for a Boundary Waters trip.

Anyone who has worked with me knows that I’ll sometimes say in a meeting, “While I was mowing….” to preface a new thought or idea that I had developed while working in the yard. I’m also known to develop an analogy or two between my backyard experiences and life/leadership. So……
I took a walk through the part of my yard that I call “the path.” It’s a well-maintained grass path through “the woods” and I keep the lawn here looking nice. So, with Weed B Gone in hand, I walked the path to squirt the broadleaf invaders. Since I’d just mowed the path the previous day, the problem plants were not so obvious as I walked… until I slowed down. Then I could see them among the desirables – hiding, laughing, and waiting. If I walked briskly, the path looked fine and problem-free – slow and I could see it needed attention.
