If I were able to go, I would love to hear about other countries family relationships in regards to faith. For instance, how do parents pass on the knowledge of God to their children? How do parents show their children their faith in God and His word? And especially, how does the family culture or relationships of other countries differ from an American style of family parenting and practicing of faith?

I agree with Kara, it is easier to think of only American ways. So maybe it is time for us to learn from the rest of our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ in this terrestrial ball. I would love to learn from the rest of the world to see what insights our church could implement for inter-generational faith.

Kara,

Brilliant! I think this is absolutely true and it's just the reality that most Americans lack global awareness. And aren't really interested either (I'll tell you about our book sales numbers sometime. heh heh). I've got a few ideas on how to approach this, but we'll see. Thanks! I like your other thought as well.

Good input. I think it's significant - it is for my community - but I also want to see the numbers. I may look for a map to show this. Visuals matter. Great idea. Yeah, we'll see about the presentation's availability. Working with some proprietary material. Thanks for taking the time to contribute, Tony

Hey T :) My roommate from Bethel married an Australian, and one thing that really stuck with me after talking with his friends from home was "Everyone knows about America, but Americans don't really know about everyone else." We assume our media is the only media, our culture is the only culture, and it seems that when we think of other countries/cultures, we only pick up on the "missionary" side [world hunger, trafficking, etc] or the vacation side of things. To really be able to connect with a person, you need the whole picture, not just the "problem" to solve [that goes along with that saying "no one cares what you know until they know that you care"]. I considered myself pretty in tune with the world until I talked with the Aussies then and have ongoing conversations with my old roommate who now lives there. I'm not really sure what you do with all of this when it comes to the presentation, but it was something I never thought about until I was faced with it.

Ha, you mean makes us look like normal people? I guess I've seen that before, almost a sigh of relief when students come to the house and see their professor (or youth worker) interested in regular things like sports, landscaping, etc.

My students love that I'm into gardening, golf, and finding really odd hole in the wall places to eat. (And they show that off by mocking me!) Having a hobby that isn't them is encouraging... more than modeling, it lowers the creepiness factor.
