I recently had Intelligentsia coffee (our favorite at the Linhart house) at Quincy’s with Adam McLane, self-described “wearer of many hats” but most noted recently for his work with Youth Specialties and now with the Youth Cartel and McLane Creative. I shared with Adam some observations from a recent leadership process where the group I was helping couldn’t make a decision that was different from how they’d always done things before. The boundaries were the same as when we started the process and the categories were static as well.
We chuckled about those ‘other’ people out there who can’t change. Hmmm. Ha. Heh heh.
But it got me to thinking a bit about my life and change. How much of who I am and what I do have I allowed for revision (by God, others, etc.)? In what ways am I repeating patterns that may be tired and worn out? Might I be heading down the aging path of inflexibility and lack of warmth? I shared with Adam that I’m not sure I change that much any more and that I bet we all are fairly set in our ways. He nodded and sipped his fancy coffee in his San Diego State sweatshirt.
We’re nearing the end of the year, a time where we celebrate Christmas and look forward to the New Year. And we make New Year’s resolutions that have mostly to do with self-discipline of various sorts.
Before we get to the year’s end, engage in this helpful and challenging leadership exercise: LIST ALL THE WAYS THAT YOU HAVE CHANGED THIS PAST YEAR. What is different about how you think, feel, act, and what you do, care about, or consider now that you didn’t in January. What routines do you engage now that weren’t a part of your life earlier? THEN LIST THE SOURCE THAT PROMPTED EACH CHANGE. Why is it that you’ve changed in each way?
And then list your results in the comments section. I’d love to see what you discover. I won’t share my ‘ah – ha’ quite yet, but I do have some strong observations about myself because of this exercise.
